Modern Glaze is a ceramic studio and storefront gallery located in Shoreline, WA, featuring the work of owner/artist Laura Brodax and other ceramic artists. The studio creates one-of-a-kind ceramics inspired by early photographic techniques and the natural world of the Pacific Northwest.
In my art practice, I use photography to bring ideas forward by screen printing imagery onto porcelain clay. I am interested in how a printed line looks glazed and fired as it creates an indelible, flowing surface. I photograph plants, seaweed and trees with fine detail and complex structures, to combine and collage. I find my influences in nineteenth century botanical illustrators and photographers, Anna Atkins and Karl Blossfeldt, Japanese wave patterns, and the printed word.
