After Mark Strathy - Seattle Views
An Invitational
The artist Mark Strathy (1953-2015) was a Seattle native who lived much of his academic and artistic career in New York City and Connecticut. He received his BFA from the University of Washington in painting where he studied with Jacob Lawrence, he went on to receive his MFA in painting from Brooklyn College. He taught for many years at Central Connecticut State University.
Mark Strathy was a storyteller, a translator of dreams as compelling as the best works of the medieval and renaissance artists he revered. His large works are mysterious and surreal, filled with a surplus of imagery, exposing magical possibilities from his rich imagination.
Modern Glaze has gathered a collection of watercolors Mark Strathy created over a time when visiting the Pacific northwest. These smaller works, on display in the gallery, represent some of Strathy’s favorite haunts and neighborhoods, and are an infinitesimal sampling of the creative brilliance exhibited in his prolific life’s work.
This show is also an invitational to long-term artist friends to create artwork inspired by Mark Strathy and have paired them accordingly.
Added to the virtual show are some of Mark Strathy’s more recent work (2010-2015) that are not physically on display.
Mark Strathy, Laura Brodax, Bette Burgoyne, Sean Gallagher, David C. Kane, Toby Kilpatrick, Rachel Siporin, Deborah Stevenson and Lana Sundberg.
Modern Glaze is now open by appointment, Thursday-Sat, 12-6.
